The homes in Newhall, Ca at Rancho LaSalle were threatened today by a small brush fire that appeared to spread quickly, shutting down all traffic on the northbound I-5 traffic.

The homes at Rancho LaSalle, are located within a gated community, right off of Calgrove. This location is adjacent to the I-5 freeway, and dangerously close to bush, canyons, and mountains.

This morning presented an awesome, beautiful, clear, and breezy Spring day that was meant to be outdoors. And indeed that's how mine started. My wife had actually scheduled my two handsome little boys (ages 2 & 4) to have a photographer take their pics this morning. The spot was set – Bridgeport Valencia. My wife actually didn't have a clue as to where within Bridgeport, but…she knew it was nice and couldn't go wrong as a backdrop for the photographer. What most people know about Bridgeport Valencia is the tall Lighthouse that faces Newhall Ranch and Mc Bean Pkwy. But there is much more!

Lakefront Bridgeport homes, beautiful waterways, pedestrian walkways for walkers, joggers, and Fido, a one-of-a-kind community clubhouse fit for any event and indeed, many take advantage of this facility for their wedding receptions. There is also a gorgeous park, and wonderful elementary school within the Bridgeport Valencia community. That's what Bridgeport Valencia is all about. And that's why we chose it for our Saturday morning, photo outing.

UPDATE: For some reason this is a popular, yet old blog post. Obviously California Pizza Kitchen didn't end up at the Valencia Town Center as part of the Patios expansion. The location California Pizza Kitchen ended up at is the newer Bridgeport Marketplace, off of Newhall Ranch Rd., in Valencia. The exact address for CPK is 24061 Newhall Ranch Rd, Valencia, Ca 91355. Here is a link to the new CPK reviews on YELP. A cool new restaurant that did end up going into The Patios project as part of The Valencia Town Center expansion, is Lazy Dog Cafe. I hear that place is worth checking out!

Here is old and now useless information, as it was once planned, for the California Pizza Kitchen…

On Tuesday January 15th, the City of Santa Clarita Planning Commission will entertain the architecture of what is sure to be one of the most popular new restaurants going into the Valencia Town Center, due to it's mega-expansion of retail stores, restaurants, and amenities. The applicant for the California Pizza Kitchen (CPK), "Geet Chand," is requesting the planning commissions approval of the architectural design. They'll likely get it as indicated by the planning commission's staff recommendation located in the agenda documents. Below is a snap shot of the new California Pizza Kitchen, taken from an elevation provided by the applicant:

The new California Pizza Kitchen at the Valencia Town Center will be a 6,139 sq ft building, featuring 218 seats, including an outdoor seating area. Here's an interesting snippet from the California Pizza Kitchen website regarding the size of their company:"Of the chain's over 210 restaurants, over 180 are company-owned and over 30 operate under franchise or license agreements. There are 26 CPK ASAP locations, 10 of which are company-owned and 16 are franchised. Another company-owned concept is LA Food Show Grill & Bar, which currently has one location in Manhattan Beach, California." I'm not sure if this will be corporate owned, or is a franchise. I'd think franchise, since the applicant for the architectural design, looks like a person's name? But what do I know anyway? Additionally on Tuesday, the planning commission will review and likely approve the Westfield Corporation's architectural design of the new 190,400 sq ft "Lifestyle Center," that will feature an outdoor retail and restaurant shopping area. Have any of you noticed the huge perimeter fences and barricades now visible at the Valencia Town Center, due to this expansion? It won't be long now before it all looks 100% different from the way it does now. This is a great example of why Santa Clarita will always be the jewel "suburb" of Los Angeles. Great places and things keep getting added to the list of reasons why Santa Claritans don't have to travel to Los Angeles anymore, except to work. I remember always having to go to Northridge as a youngster, to use their mall, or go here, and go there. Not anymore. Thank God, especially with where gas prices are at now.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has issued very helpful maps for the Southern California area, that depict various mudslide (debris) hazards, that may result from the recent fires in October 2007 that much of Southern California experienced.

For Santa Clarita, the Buckweed and The Ranch fire incidents left quite a mark on the community, and many homes and structures lost. In a heavy rain storm, as classified by the USGS, specific areas of Santa Clarita, may experience severe mudslides, some areas marked as within the path of  debris flow have homes in them.

The Signal reports that there are about 50 homes throughout Santa Clarita that may be effected under certain storm conditions, likely areas hit very hard by the fires. Apparently the City of Santa Clarita has contacted the potentially at-risk homeowners, and advised them on how to best protect themselves in the event of a mud/landslide (ie Sand Bags available at fire station, etc).

To take a look at which areas burned in Santa Clarita, are now at risk from mudslides, take a look at these helpful maps provided by the USGS. These maps will be a great tool for local emergency personnel, to focus on these areas that have been extensively surveyed and pin-pointed as hot spots for future hazards as a result of heavy rain, and natural occurrences, perhaps earthquakes?

I can throw a rock at the mudslide area from my home! Well, maybe it’ll take a golf ball and a 3 iron?
