November 13, 2007, at the Santa Clarita City Council meeting, an ordinance will be introduced that’ll provide for a 5% increase in each city councilmembers’ salary. Do any of you know how much they make on a monthly basis right now? This kills me – just $1425.55! These are good people, and they work hard for the city, putting in a lot of hours. I can’t even count on my hand how often I’ve seen them over by City Hall, randomly driving in and out – my office building is just a few buildings east of City Hall. I know they spend a lot of time there, and elsewhere, at certain functions representing the City of Santa Clarita.
Government Code Section 36516(c) provides for basic provisions that allow regular adjustments to City Council compensation. They try to make it fair, by always having the current City Council, adopt a salary increase for the future City Council body. This ordinance will be introduced Tuesday November 13, 2007, and be passed for a second reading to take place November 27, 2007. The 5% increase, will elevate the salaries up to $1,571.67 per month, and will be effective as of July 1, 2008. It appears that it’ll be a retroactive increase as well, for councilmembers who still may be with the council at that time, since section 36516(c) provides for a 5% increase each year, from the operative date of the last adjustment to the council salary, which for Santa Clarita took place July 1, 2006.
Can you imagine working so many hours on behalf of the city, playing that big of a role in one of the largest cities in California, and only making $18,860.04 a year for the effort! I suppose it’d be very difficult for anyone to be able to fulfill the duties of the council when they have to work a full time job elsewhere that requires much of their time. That doesn’t even include lost time with family!
I vote AY! Give them their whopping 5%! Make it 10% while you’re at it. The city can afford it.
